Car of the Week: BYD Seal Review Nigeria — Better Than a Camry or C-Class?

Last week we looked at the Xpeng P7 — the electric sedan with factory butterfly doors that makes a strong case against used European luxury alternatives at the same price. If you missed that one, go back and read it here. This week, we spotted something in Lagos that asks an even more uncomfortable question.

This Week: BYD Seal

We spotted a BYD Seal on the streets of Lagos recently and it prompted a question that we are going to ask directly. Why are people still paying more for a Camry, a Honda Accord or a Mercedes C-Class? Before anyone gets defensive — those are genuinely good cars. The Camry has reliability that is almost boring in how consistent it is. The Accord is practical and well-engineered. The C-Class gives you a badge that still carries real social weight in Nigeria. Nobody is dismissing any of that. But if you are buying a car based on what you actually get for your money, the BYD Seal walks into that conversation and changes it completely.

Performance and Specs

Powertrain Options: Rear-wheel drive (standard) / All-wheel drive (performance trim)

Power Output: Up to 530 horsepower on the performance AWD model

Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds on the performance version

Rated Range: Up to 600 kilometres depending on the variant

Transmission: Single-speed electric

Fuel Type: Fully electric

Key Interior Feature: Rotating 15.6-inch central touchscreen

Driver Assistance: Comprehensive ADAS suite across trims 530 horsepower in a production electric sedan that you can buy right now. Not a concept car. Not a limited edition. A car you can own and drive to the office on a Monday morning, past a fuel station, without stopping. The instant torque delivery of electric motors means all of that power is available the moment you press the accelerator, not after the engine climbs through its rev range. The performance model does 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. That is proper sports car territory. But the Seal is not just a performance story. The standard rear-wheel drive version is composed, smooth and refined — the kind of everyday electric sedan that makes you wonder why you ever needed a noisy combustion engine for a commute.

Price and Value

Price Range (Nigeria): ₦40-₦55M – varies by year and trim

Availability: Import market, growing presence in Nigeria

Comparable Alternatives: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mercedes C-Class Here is the honest comparison.

A Camry at similar money is reliable — but it is reliable in a 2015 way. The technology inside, the driving experience, the powertrain efficiency — it is a well-executed product from a previous generation of thinking about what a sedan should be. An Accord is practical and well-built, but it is not making anyone's heart rate change when they sit inside it. A C-Class gives you the three-pointed star on the bonnet, genuine interior quality and the kind of social signal that still matters in Nigerian culture.

That is real value and it should not be dismissed. But a used C-Class in the same budget as a BYD Seal is a used C-Class — with the maintenance profile that comes with age, a combustion engine that still needs oil, filters and servicing, and technology that felt premium when it was new. The BYD Seal is newer. Faster. More technologically advanced. And every kilometre you drive it costs a fraction of what a petrol sedan costs per kilometre on Nigerian roads, as we broke down in a previous post. The question is not whether the Seal is as good as a Camry or a C-Class. The question is whether buyers are still paying for badges when better technology is already sitting right in front of them.

Nigerian Road Context

The BYD Seal sits lower than an SUV, so ride height is something to factor in depending on your regular routes. On Lagos expressways and well-maintained roads, it is completely at home. On rougher urban roads or areas with significant flooding during rainy season, you will want to plan your routes accordingly, as you would with any low-riding sedan.

The 600km rated range is reassuring from an anxiety standpoint, but real-world range in Nigerian conditions — with air conditioning running constantly and stop-start city traffic — will sit lower than the rated figure. That is true of every EV across every market. In daily Lagos driving, a full charge still goes considerably further than most people's weekly mileage, which makes charging once or twice a week at home a realistic routine for most owners.

The rotating touchscreen is genuinely useful in practice, letting you switch it between driver-facing and passenger-facing orientations. It sounds like a gimmick until you use it and realise it is not. As with any EV in Nigeria, home charging setup matters. A stable power supply or solar and battery storage arrangement transforms the ownership experience. Parts and service for BYD are developing in Nigeria as the brand grows — buying a properly inspected example from a reputable source remains the most important decision you will make.

Where to Get It

The BYD Seal is an import vehicle in Nigeria and availability varies. Battery health, service history and overall condition are the three things you must verify before committing to any EV purchase. At Aladi Autos, we source, inspect and deliver.

Final Verdict

Who it's for: Buyers who are ready to stop paying for legacy badges and want a modern, fast, technologically advanced electric sedan that makes the Camry-Accord-C-Class conversation feel dated.

Who should look elsewhere: Buyers for whom the social signal of a European or Japanese badge is a genuine priority, or those whose daily routes and charging setup are not yet EV-friendly.

Aladi Autos Rating: 4.5 out of 5. The BYD Seal does not ask you to compromise. It asks you to reconsider what you thought a sedan at this price was supposed to be.
